I hope this finds you keeping well, in good spirits and health. I’m pleased to be sharing the latest Midweek Edutainment. A lot has been happening in the African world, but I’ve tried not to over-share! Enjoy, and hope to see you in our next live stream.
“The World’s Oldest Meme (And its origin in Scientific Racism)” - King’s Monologue
King’s Monologue is one of a number of excellent YouTube channels setting the record straight about African history. This is a great unpacking of the “We Wuz Kangz” trope that you’ve surely come across over the years.
“Go And Marry!” - Flo Chineyere
Africans often face intense pressure to “Go and Marry.” While marriage and procreation are perhaps the key social ends of African philosophy, oftentimes this pressure is malignant. In this heart-warming, funny and poignant video, YouTuber Flo Chinyere (who normally does cooking videos) pushes back against the assumptions that often lie behind the “Go and Marry” demand.
“Binary Bisecting: Anthology of African Writings on AI” (Free E-Book)
Artificial Intelligence is a permanent hot potato topic these days, so I was very pleased to see the launch of this free E-book on the subject. The book is made up of 17 pieces from 16 talented writers from across the continent, including countries such as Botswana, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and South Africa. “The Magic of Afro Surrealism” - Netta Selene
I found this great short video from a YouTuber called Netta Selene introducing the term Afro Surrealism. As she puts it “In a lot of ways, just about every Black person is an Afro-surrealist, because in a world where we're seen as lesser than, where vestiges of slavery continue to manifest themselves, where we have to fight for access to basic human and civil rights, we have to be able to imagine something more than what's right in front of us. We have to imagine another world beyond this one, where we're just normal people living our lives.”
“align with Nature’s Intelligence” - muva of Earth
I give thanks for the UK record label Brownswood Recordings who shine a light on some fine talent in the UK. This is the first time I’ve heard of muva of Earth and I’m hooked already.
